The festival derives its name from "Holika" who was the sister of "Hiranyakashyap", a demon King if we refer to the Hindu mythology. Prahlad, the son of Hiranyakashyap worshiped Vishnu despite his denial leading him to order Prahlad to sit on pyre with Holika as she was immune to fire. However, on doing so Holika got burnt to death but miracle saved Prahlad.

As an infant Lord Krishna was poisoned by Putana while feeding him which lent and thus the blue color to his skin. Krishna was unsure if Radha and others who were fair skinned would like him. Due to this reason, while he approached Radha, he colored her face and Radha accepted him irrespective of the blue color of his skin and since that day the festival of Holi is celebrated.

Occurrence of event

The festival arrives after the full moon in 'Phalguna', that is, the month February and March and the precise date depends on the Hindu Calendar though arrival may vary on the basis of Gregorian calendar.
